Let S = annual base salary, L = benefits/overhead load factor, T = tenure in months, P= share of a solid engineer's output delivered. Monthly loaded cost M = S · L / 12. All figures compute client-side; nothing is sent anywhere.

For a mid-level engineer on a US$140k base, a bad hire runs roughly $101k–$162k once wasted pay, recruiting, engineering interview hours, team drag and re-hire restart are counted — about 1.1–1.2× annual salary. That sits inside the widely cited 30%–200%-of-salary band, and the calculator above lets you set your own numbers.
What's the 30% rule?+
The US Department of Labor is commonly cited for the estimate that a bad hire costs at least 30% of that employee's first-year earnings. It's a useful floor for entry-level roles, but it undercounts senior engineering hires, where interview time and team drag dominate.
Why are engineering bad hires more expensive?+
Engineers are interviewed by other, usually more senior engineers, so every screen burns expensive delivery time. A weak hire also drags the whole team through reviews, rework and blocked work, and the seat can take months to backfill — costs a generic HR calculator never models.
